EU Settlement Scheme- Press Release 08/06/21
Only 3 weeks remain for EU citizens in Leicestershire to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme before the deadline
Citizens Advice LeicesterShire is reminding EU citizens to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme before the deadline of 30 June 2021.
Those who wish to remain in the UK need to obtain settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme. Without this they may lose the right to live and work in the UK once the deadline is passed.
Citizens from the EU, EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, plus non-British family members of citizens of these countries need to apply the scheme before the deadline. To be eligible, they need to have arrived in the UK before 31 December 2020.
Irish citizens do not need to apply to the Settlement Scheme, but their non-British family members will need settled or pre-settled status to remain in the UK.
It is free to apply to the EU Settlement Scheme and the best way to do so is online at: https://www.gov.uk/settled-status-eu-citizens-families
From 1 July 2021, EU citizens may be asked to prove their right to do things like get a job or use the NHS. Those with settled or pre-settled status will retain the right to:
- Stay in the UK
- Work
- Study
- Use the NHS
- Rent a home
Richard Evans, Chief Executive of Citizens Advice LeicesterShire, said:
“It is hugely important for EU citizens who wish to remain living and working in Leicester and Leicestershire to apply for the Settlement Scheme now, while they are still able to.
The Brexit vote of 2016 means that we are no longer bound by EU rules on freedom of movement, which has brought EU citizens into the UK immigration system for the first time.
We urge anyone who is having difficulties in applying to the EU Settlement Scheme to contact Citizens Advice LeicesterShire.”
