Citizens Advice LeicesterShire and Mesothelioma UK are working together to provide national benefits and compensation support for people affected by asbestos cancer.
Financial support for people with mesothelioma
Mesothelioma is a malignant cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos fibres.
Since mesothelioma is almost always caused by asbestos, if a client has a confirmed diagnosis and was exposed to asbestos at work, then they may be entitled to Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit. There may also be other benefits that they can claim, as well as compensation from their employer or the government.
This can be a complex process, particularly for people coming to terms with what can be a terminal diagnosis. Around 2,500 people are diagnosed with mesothelioma in the UK every year. 60% will not survive more than 12 months.
Since 2015, Mesothelioma UK has funded a Citizens Advice benefits and compensation caseworker to work exclusively with people who have been diagnosed with mesothelioma. The caseworker is based at Glenfield Hospital and can visit people at home in Leicester and Leicestershire.
Over the past 2 years, Citizens Advice LeicesterShire has helped around 300 people to claim a total of £3.2 million in lump sum payments and £2.1 million in welfare benefits.
Meso UK are a national resource centre that provide specialist Mesothelioma information, support & improved care and treatment.
